Whole house surge protection is a device mounted at your breaker box that sends excess voltage to ground before it reaches your circuits. Surges come from lightning, grid switching, and motors inside your home, like an AC compressor starting up. Residential Electrical Services checks your panel, installs the surge protector to code, pulls the permit when required, and tests it before we leave.

How a Whole House Surge Protector Works

A surge is a spike in voltage that lasts a fraction of a second. A whole house surge protector sits at your panel, between incoming power and your circuits. When voltage spikes, it sends the extra energy to your grounding system.

Not every surge comes from outside. Your AC compressor and refrigerator create small surges every time they cycle on. One won’t ruin anything. Years of them wear down the circuit boards in appliances and HVAC equipment.

Is Whole House Surge Protection Worth It?

For most homes, yes. Your AC, refrigerator, and washer all run on control boards now, and those boards are what surges damage. Whole house surge protection covers hardwired equipment a plug-in strip can’t reach.

It has limits. No surge protector stops a direct lightning strike. Computers and TVs still need a plug-in protector as a second layer.

We’ll tell you honestly whether it makes sense for your home. Sometimes a surge protector is the right fix, and a bigger job isn’t.

"I contacted RES for a 2nd opinion. Another electrician came to check an outlet that sparked when a laptop was plugged in. He tightened the loose wire, then strongly recommended I replace all the outlets in the house and the breaker box. I called RES and Billy checked the outlet and suggested using a surge protector. He looked through the house, and the outlets and breaker box are fine. I was very impressed. It is refreshing to find a service professional with integrity."

Installing a Surge Protector at Your Breaker Box

  1. We start with your panel: its condition, room for the surge protector’s breaker, and your grounding. A surge protector can only send voltage to ground if the ground is good.

  2. We keep the wire runs short, because shorter leads let the protector react faster.

  3. Then we test it, confirm the indicator shows it’s working, and show you what to watch for.

We can’t know what’s inside your panel until we open it. If something doesn’t look right, we’ll show you before any work begins. Learn more about our Electrical Panels and Breaker Boxes services.

"I received three quotes for the work and RES was the clear winner. They were also able to complete the work in a timely manner. Our electrical panel was updated and brought up to code including the 'Fireman's Cutoff' and surge protector. They arrived early and were ready to work. They did an excellent job of labeling the breakers, something that was missing from the original installation. The electrical inspector came by and approved the work indicating that this company does good work."

Whole House Surge Protection and Current Electrical Code

Since the 2020 edition, the National Electrical Code has required surge protection on the electrical service for homes (NEC 230.67). That applies to new services and to replaced service equipment.

So an electrical panel upgrade now includes a surge protector. If your panel predates the rule, you can add one without replacing anything else.

Surge Protection for Your AC Unit and HVAC System

In a Houston summer, your AC is the equipment you can least afford to lose.

Central AC is hardwired, so it can’t plug into a surge protector. We can install a dedicated surge protector at the outdoor disconnect beside the condenser, as a second layer behind the whole house device at your panel. Pool equipment can be protected the same way. If you’re adding a home charger, surge protection belongs in that plan too. See our EV charger installation page.

Whole House Surge Protector Cost: What Affects the Price

We price whole house surge protection after we see your panel. As Billy Mendoza, owner and licensed master electrician, puts it: “No electrician is going to know what’s wrong, or what’s needed, without looking at it first.”

The main factors are:

  • Panel type, and whether it has space for the surge protector’s breaker
  • Panel condition, and any corrections it needs first
  • The surge protector itself
  • HVAC protection at the condenser, if you want it
  • Permit and inspection, where required

You’ll have a clear price before we start.

Common Problems and When to Replace a Whole House Surge Protector

A whole house surge protector wears down each time it absorbs a surge. After enough of them, or one large one, it stops protecting. Most units have an indicator light. Check it after a big storm. If the light is off or shows a fault, replace the device.

The other common problems start at installation:

  • Poor grounding,
  • Long wire runs, or
  • A device that doesn’t match the panel.

What If a Surge Already Damaged Something?

Dead outlets or breakers that trip after a storm need a diagnosis first. See our electrical repair page.

Whole House Surge Protection FAQs

Do I need an electrician to install a whole house surge protector?

Yes. Installation happens inside your main panel, where the incoming service wires stay live even with the main breaker off. A licensed electrician also checks the grounding and handles the permit when your city requires one.

Usually, yes. If there’s no room for its breaker, some models mount beside the panel. If the panel itself is failing, we’ll tell you. A surge protector won’t fix a panel that needs replacing.

A Type 1 surge protector can be installed ahead of the main breaker, on the utility side. A Type 2 installs after the main breaker, usually on its own breaker inside the panel.

It protects against surges from lightning that hits nearby power lines. It can’t stop a direct strike to your house. If you’re preparing for storm season, see Generator Installation and Surge Protection.

Yes, for computers and TVs. The panel device stops the big surges. A plug-in strip handles what’s left at the outlet.

No. Central AC units are hardwired. HVAC surge protection is installed at the outdoor disconnect.
